    BEIJING, Jun 26, 2026 [VoM News]: Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People here during his first official visit to an overseas country since assuming office to discuss ways of strengthening the bilateral ties.

    The two sides engaged in talks on further expanding bilateral cooperation in strategic affairs, trade, investment, infrastructure, job creation and people-to-people interactions. Bangladesh also looks forward to securing the backing of China for important schemes including the project for the management of the Teesta River.

    Previously, Rahman met with China Premier Li Qiang and the two sides afterwards signed 13 MoUs in various fields under the China’s Global Development Initiative.

    Bangladesh is also preparing for the purchase of 24 Chengdu J-10CE fighter jets from China. If this is completed Bangladesh would be only second after Pakistan the country other than China which operates this military aircraft.

    After his meeting with PM Tarique Rahman Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mao Ning said in a statement that President Xi welcomed the deepening of relations with Bangladesh and pledged to continue supporting its sovereignty, territorial integrity and independent development. PM Rahman’s China tour came a day after visiting Malaysia, concluding his maiden overseas tour.
