India Government Restores Commercial LPG Supply as West Asia Disruption Eases
NEW DELHI, June 25, [VoM News] : After assuaging fears of fuel shortages resulting from the recent West Asia conflict, the government has brought back supplies of commercial packed LPG to hotels, restaurants and other business to normal levels.
The Ministry of Petroleum announced the lifting of restrictions on non-domestic LPG cylinders as domestic supplies have increased, and additional imported cargoes are expected. Initially, a temporary halt was imposed on Bulk LPG supplies as all disruptions occurred, but supply has now resumed at 50 per cent of pre-outage levels.
Curbs were imposed following disruptions linked to conflict raised fears over among others import of LPG from the Middle East, which accounts for a large percentage of India’s imported cooking gas. Priority was given to domestic consumers, with supplies to commercial and industrial consumers being curtailed first.
With the augmentation of supplies, the diversion of C3 and C4 hydrocarbon streams from petrochemical industries to LPG by Govt had been reduced, and further releasing of feedstock to petrochemical and other downstream industries is expected.
The ministry said that indigenous LPG production will be kept at a minimum of 40,000 tonnes/day. The Centre for High Technology will issue company-wise allocations of C3-C4 streams and submit routine reports.
The state operated oil marketing companies have also been asked to develop a common database of the commercial/industrial consumers for planning purpose. The government said this available commercial LPG consumers will be progressive shifted to piped natural gas wherever city gas grid is available.
