Iran Plans to Charge Vessels For Transit Through Strait of Hormuz; US Rejects
Tehran, June 26, 2026 [VoM News]: Iran is weighing charging passage fees for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a measure which it believes could raise up to $40 billion annually in service and transit charges.
Following recent agreement between Iran and the U.S. Which resumed navigation thru the strait, Iran is reportedly debating charging usage fees and has spoken to China and Persian Gulf nations about the idea.
Neighboring nations along the strait have also been approached and invited to co-share revenues should Iran pursue this plan. The United States, however, has strongly objected to the proposal, with Marco Rubio asserting that allowing one nation to charge transit fees for an international waterway would create an alarming precedent against the principle of free movement of international shipping.
Rubio added that there is no support from Gulf neighbors, with Oman (co-governing the Strait) also rejecting any form of payment, with foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi stating that “The waters are the waters and that should remain. They should remain free for transit by all.”
Iran cites the example of Turkey’s practices at the Dardanelles (under the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits) as justification, saying they already allow payments for various services to ships.
Roughly 20 percent of global oil oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
