RATLAM, June 26: Three people were killed and 10 others injured after a Tazia procession during Muharram came into contact with a high-tension power line in Ratlam late Thursday night, officials said.
The incident occurred around 11:15 pm in Hatnara village under the Pipaluda police station limits. According to Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar, three people lost their lives in the accident, while the injured are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. He said an investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Eyewitnesses said the Tazia was passing through the Mewati Mohalla area when it struck an overhead high-voltage power line. Those carrying the structure were electrocuted and collapsed, while several others nearby also sustained electric shock after coming into contact with them.
Officials at Ratlam Medical College confirmed the fatalities. Dr. Ravindra Solanki said three of the victims brought to the hospital had already died by the time they arrived.
Authorities are investigating the incident, including whether adequate safety measures and route inspections had been carried out before the procession.
