Islamic Preacher Maulana Mufti Salman Azhari Arrested in Alleged Hate Speech Case
Maulana Mufti Salman Azhari, arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in connection with an alleged hate speech case, was brought to the ATS office in Ahmedabad for investigation. The ATS officials secured a two-day remand from a Mumbai Court, allowing them to bring Azhari to Gujarat.
Transit Remand Granted Amid Legal Controversy
A Mumbai Court granted transit remand to the Gujarat Police, permitting them to take Azhari to Junagadh. Azhari’s lawyer raised concerns about the legality of his detention, claiming proper legal procedures were not followed. The preacher’s supporters gathered outside the Ghatkopar Police Station in Mumbai, demanding his release.
Case Registered Against Protesters; Azhari Appeals for Calm
Mumbai Police registered a case against the mob protesting outside the police station. In response, Azhari appealed to his supporters not to protest, asserting his cooperation with the investigation. He maintained his innocence, stating that he was neither a criminal nor brought in for committing a crime.
Political Response and Calls for Justice
Waris Pathan, the National spokesperson of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, defended Azhari, claiming he did not deliver any provocative speech. Pathan emphasized the need for due process and expressed faith in the legal system for justice. The alleged hate speech took place at an event near the ‘B’ division police station in Junagadh on January 31.
