In a tragic turn of events, the death toll in the Sikkim flash floods has risen to 40, with 76 individuals still unaccounted for in the affected state. This devastating news comes as a major blow to the region, as rescue and relief efforts intensify to address the consequences of this natural disaster.
Mass Evacuations Underway in Sikkim
The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) has been working tirelessly to rescue and evacuate the affected population from all four impacted districts. To date, a total of 4,418 people have been successfully evacuated. These efforts have been concentrated in various regions, with Mangan (2,705), Gangtok (1,025), Pakyong (58), and Namchi (630) bearing the brunt of the catastrophe. Unfortunately, these evacuations come at the cost of 40 lives, with Pakyong being the hardest hit, accounting for 15 of these casualties.
Relief Camps Providing Shelter for Displaced Residents
Currently, the SSDMA reports that 1,852 people are taking refuge in 19 relief camps established across the four affected districts. These camps are providing essential shelter and support to those who have been displaced by the devastating flash floods.
Government Aid for Affected Laborers
In a positive development, the Sikkim government has extended its support to laborers affected by the disaster. Laborers registered under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) welfare board will receive financial relief, with each laborer set to receive Rs 10,000 as a helping hand during these trying times. This assistance aims to alleviate the suffering brought about by the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood across the Teesta River Basin in Gangtok.I
ndian Army’s Resilient Relief Efforts
The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps continues to play a crucial role in the ongoing relief efforts in the region. Their relentless dedication to rebuilding and reconnecting areas that were severed by the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood is commendable. Despite adverse weather conditions, the Sappers have managed to construct a foot suspension bridge over the Mighty Teesta River in North Sikkim, improving accessibility for those affected.
Furthermore, the Trishakti Corps recently conducted a heroic rescue mission in North Sikkim from October 7 to 13. Braving treacherous terrain and unfavorable weather conditions, the troops reached the isolated village of Rabom in North Sikkim, providing essential food and medical aid to the stranded residents. Their unwavering commitment enabled them to construct a helipad in the village, facilitating better access for the troops. The flash floods, triggered by the bursting of the Lhonak glacier in the Sikkim Himalayas on October 3, resulted in a significant rise in water levels in the Teesta River and widespread inundation across the state.
The region now faces the daunting task of recovery, including restoring footbridges, roads, and other critical infrastructure that has been severely affected. The spirit and resilience displayed by the people of Sikkim, coupled with the relentless efforts of relief organizations and the Indian Army, are shining beacons of hope during these challenging times.
