Boston, MA—August 23, 2024—A highly sought-after Apple-1 computer, originally part of a ‘trade-in’ pile in Steve Jobs’ office and gifted by Jobs and Steve Wozniak to Apple’s first applications engineer, Dana Redington, has sold for $315,914, according to Boston-based RR Auction.

This exceptional Apple-1 computer, restored to full functionality, comes from the collection of early Apple employee Dana Redington, who acquired it in early 1978. Redington discovered the Apple-1 board in a pile of soon-to-be-discarded hardware while preparing for a move. With Jobs and Wozniak’s permission, he selected the best motherboard and a few accessories from the pile. This board, previously unknown to the Apple collecting community, has now been logged as #104 in the Apple-1 Registry.

In a 2013 interview, Wozniak reflected on Redington’s contributions, praising his innovative software development, including the first high-resolution game on the Apple II. Despite initial skepticism from Steve Jobs, Redington’s work is now recognized as a key part of Apple’s early history. After leaving Apple in 1978, Redington continued to innovate in high-tech startups and medical research, earning several patents.

“The provenance of this Apple-1, directly linked to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, makes it an exceptional piece,” said Bobby Livingston, Executive Vice President at RR Auction. “The sale price reflects the historical significance and rarity of such items, and we are honored to have facilitated its transition to a new custodian.”

The auction achieved a total of $983,096, with highlights including:

Apple Lisa-1 computer with original ‘Twiggy’ drives: Representing the mass-market introduction of the mouse and GUI, sold for $81,251.

Steve Jobs signed the 1976 Apple Computer Check No. 4, predating the official founding of the company: PSA GEM MT 10, which sold for $66,844.
