Key Highlights:
- Code of Conduct Enforced: The election code of conduct has been implemented with the first phase of voting scheduled for September 18 in Doda district.
- Nomination Deadline: Candidates must file nominations by August 27, with the last date for withdrawal on August 30.
- Three-Phase Polling: Jammu and Kashmir elections will occur in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with results on October 4.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the election schedule for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with polling to be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1.
The District Election Officer of Doda, Harvinder Singh, stated that the election code of conduct has come into force as the district’s three constituencies will participate in the first phase of voting on September 18.
During a press conference, Singh highlighted that the notification for polling will be issued on August 20. Candidates have until August 27 to file their nominations, and the final date for withdrawing candidature is set for August 30.
The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are particularly significant, as they mark the first assembly elections in the region since 2014. The state has been without a legislative assembly since June 2018, following the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government.
The Supreme Court, in December 2023, instructed the central government to complete the election process by September 30, 2024.
The ECI has emphasized the need for a fair and transparent election process, directing enforcement agencies to ensure impartiality and a level playing field.
There are 90 assembly constituencies in total, with 87.09 lakh electors, including 3.71 lakh first-time voters.
Vote counting is scheduled for October 4, which will conclude the election process in the Union Territory.
