Israeli Soccer Field Rocket Attack Kills 10, Escalating Tensions with Hezbollah
Key Highlights:
- Rocket attack on soccer field kills 10 and wounds over 20 in Golan Heights.
- Hezbollah and Israel exchange deadly strikes, raising regional conflict fears.
- Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu returns from the US amid escalating violence.
A rocket attack on a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights on July 27 resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people and left over 20 others wounded, including children, according to Israeli sources.
This attack came shortly after an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon killed three Hezbollah members, escalating tensions between the long-time adversaries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is hastily returning from the United States due to the severity of the situation. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacking an Israeli military base in the Golan Heights, citing retaliation for Israeli attacks on a Lebanese village.
However, Hezbollah’s chief spokesman, Mohammed Afif, denied any involvement in the attack on Majdal Shams. Contrarily, Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari accused Hezbollah of deception, asserting that all casualties were aged 10 to 20.
The Israeli military’s statement emphasized that their intelligence identified Hezbollah as responsible for the rocket launch at Majdal Shams, resulting in multiple civilian casualties. Israel’s Magen David Adom paramedic service reported 11 people initially wounded, nine critically, with footage showing the injured being rushed to ambulances.
Local council head Beni Ben Muvchar, addressing Israeli Channel 12, highlighted the gravity of the attack on young soccer players, urging Israeli leadership to take decisive action against Hezbollah commanders.
The Israeli military confirmed one projectile crossing from Lebanon, working with MDA to evacuate the wounded. Footage of a large explosion in the town’s valley was aired by Channel 12.
Hezbollah’s response, including Katyusha rocket fire at an Israeli army post, was in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanese villages. The Israeli military targeted a Hezbollah arms depot in Kfar Kila, where militants were reportedly present.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it in 1981.
