Key Highlights:

- Court mandates Shah’s appearance before closing the case.
On Friday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed a plea from Pakistan’s central government to shut down the case of forcibly disappeared poet Ahmed Farhad Shah, according to The News International. The case, represented by human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali, was filed by Shah’s wife. The federal government was represented by Additional Attorney General Munawwar Iqbal.
The plea was presented before IHC Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani. During the hearing, Iqbal informed the court that Farhad was under physical remand until June 2 and requested the court to conclude the illegal confinement case. However, Mazari, representing Farhad’s wife, insisted on strict action against those responsible for Farhad’s disappearance.
Mazari highlighted that when Shah’s family visited the Dhirkot Police Station in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK), they could not locate him but discovered he had been transferred to Muzaffarabad under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Justice Kayani rejected the federal government’s plea, stating that the case would only conclude once Shah was produced before the court.
The IHC judge adjourned the hearings until June 7. Farhad’s wife, Urooj Zainab, who filed the petition on May 15, is seeking her husband’s recovery and urging the court to identify, investigate, and prosecute those responsible for his disappearance.
