Heavy rains and strong winds from Cyclone Remal have caused widespread destruction in Assam, resulting in one death and 17 injuries, according to officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. The cyclone, which made landfall in West Bengal and Bangladesh, has prompted high alert warnings across several districts in Assam.
A significant portion of the Haflong-Silchar link road in Dima Hasao district has been washed away by rising river waters, cutting off transportation. The cyclone has severely impacted 11 districts, including Kamrup, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Morigaon. In Morigaon, one person died and four others were injured due to heavy rains, while in Sonitpur’s Dhekiajuli area, 12 students from Usha English School were injured by a falling tree branch that struck their school bus. All injured students have been hospitalized and are under medical supervision.
Numerous incidents of fallen trees and increased river water levels have been reported, particularly in Kamrup and Nagaon districts. Several landslides have also occurred, prompting the closure of the Haflong-Silchar connecting road until June 1. Simanta Kumar Das, Deputy Commissioner of Dima Hasao District, stated that rescue teams are actively monitoring the situation and addressing the landslides and road blockages.
Amid the ongoing storms and relentless rain, State Disaster Response Force teams, along with police and forest department officials, are working continuously to clear debris and restore normalcy. Cyclone Remal, which made landfall in Bangladesh’s coastal area, has weakened and is expected to downgrade into a deep depression, according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
