The anti-Taliban demonstrations in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan’s Darayim district extended into their second day on Saturday, with residents expressing apprehension over the detention of five community leaders, as reported by Khaama Press. According to the residents, the Taliban detained the leaders to discuss the demands raised by the protesters, but their fate remains unknown.
The protests erupted after Taliban fighters allegedly fired at demonstrators, resulting in at least one casualty. Despite this, the residents persisted with their march, underscoring their grievances against the Taliban’s actions, particularly regarding the alleged molestation of women in their homes during a confrontation over poppy fields.
Videos circulating online depict protesters rejecting the Taliban’s presence in Badakhshan, with chants expressing their opposition to the Taliban’s “Islamic Emirate” in the province. Demonstrators accuse the Taliban of harassing and threatening residents, alleging violations of their honor, religion, and privacy.
The demonstrators assert that Taliban members engage in house-to-house harassment and intimidation, further accusing the group of demolishing homes and perpetrating oppression and injustice against the populace. Despite these allegations and ongoing protests, Taliban leaders in Kabul have yet to respond to the grievances raised by residents in Badakhshan’s Darayim area.
