Expressing his concerns, Bennett stressed the critical role of journalism in Afghanistan and condemned the growing media suppression and arbitrary arrests of journalists. He urged the international community to rally behind Afghan journalists during these challenging times.
Karen B. Decker, the American Charge d’Affaires to Afghanistan, echoed Bennett’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of amplifying Afghan journalists’ voices. Decker underscored the need to protect press freedom worldwide, stating that Afghan journalists serve as vital conduits for Afghan messages and should be heard and supported.
Meanwhile, Afghan journalists echoed the sentiment, highlighting the pivotal role of media in driving governmental reforms, maintaining societal order, and combating irregularities. They called for increased dialogue between journalists and officials and emphasized the timely provision of information by authorities.
The concerning situation in Afghanistan has led to a significant decline in the country’s ranking in Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Index, dropping 26 places and landing at 178th overall. The deteriorating media climate, marked by journalist fatalities and arrests, underscores the urgent need for safeguarding press freedom in the nation.
