On World Press Freedom Day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres drew attention to the growing threat against journalists reporting on environmental issues, highlighting the rising violence faced by media professionals in this field. Guterres emphasized the crucial role journalists play in educating the public about the global environmental and climate emergency, which poses a threat to future generations.
Recent reports from UNESCO shed light on the alarming situation faced by environmental journalists, with around 750 attacks recorded over the past 15 years. Guilherme Canela, UNESCO’s chief of freedom of expression and safety of journalists, revealed that 70% of environmental reporters have experienced some form of violence, with 44 journalists killed in the last 50 years.
In light of these challenges, UNESCO reiterates its commitment to defending press freedom and supporting journalists worldwide.
