Pashtun leader accuses Pakistan of mistreating PTM leader Manzoor Ahmad Pashteen
During the 38th meeting of the 55th General Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, activist Muhammad Waleed addressed the council regarding the torture inflicted on Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leader Manzoor Ahmad Pashteen by the Pakistani administration.
Waleed highlighted the numerous human rights violations committed against Pashteen, including harassment, intimidation, enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, and physical torture. He drew attention to Pashteen’s illegal arrest by a joint ISI-Police team in Balochistan’s Chaman district on December 4, 2023, and his subsequent incommunicado detention in various facilities.
Details of Torture
According to Waleed, Pashteen endured mental and physical torture during his three-month detention, which included sleep deprivation, confinement in inhospitable conditions, and physical abuse. Pashteen was reportedly subjected to poor living conditions, overcrowding, inadequate nutrition, and constant threats from military personnel.
Waleed also mentioned the plight of three other human rights defenders—Gilaman Wazir, Zakim Wazir, and Eid ur Rehman Wazir—who faced similar treatment during their seven-month custody. He emphasized the urgent need for the UNHRC to intervene and address these gross human rights violations.
Call for Action
In his plea to the council, Waleed urged for immediate action against the perpetrators of these atrocities, emphasizing that Pakistan is a signatory to the UN Convention against Torture. He called for accountability and justice to ensure that those responsible for the torture of Pashteen and other activists are held accountable for their actions.
