EVMs Could Solve Pakistan’s Poll Rigging Issues: Imran Khan
During a conversation with journalists at Adiala jail, incarcerated former premier Imran Khan asserted that the introduction of electronic voting machines (EVMs) would swiftly resolve rigging issues in elections. He expressed confidence that if EVMs had been utilized, the problem would have been resolved within an hour, according to a report by Dawn.
Allegations Against Election Commission and Political Entities
Imran Khan accused the Election Commission of Pakistan, certain political parties, and elements within the ‘establishment’ of obstructing the implementation of electronic voting mechanisms. He called for “high treason proceedings” against officials responsible for alleged electoral malpractices and theft of the people’s mandate.
Critique of Political Interference and Economic Situation
The former premier criticized what he perceived as political interference in the electoral process, highlighting grievances regarding the allocation of reserved seats and challenges faced by his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Imran Khan also commented on the country’s economic condition, questioning the sustainability of the incumbent government and rejecting criticism regarding the PTI’s handling of the economy.
Challenges and Legal Proceedings
Imran Khan expressed concerns about potential legal repercussions in ongoing cases, including the Al-Qadir Trust case, while addressing issues related to electoral irregularities and the country’s economic challenges. He advocated for structural reforms and emphasized the importance of responsible borrowing to address the nation’s debt burden. Additionally, he offered critique regarding a recent meeting between PTI’s Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, cautioning against perceived political overtures.
