ED Initiates Money Laundering Probe Against TMC Leader Sheikh Shahjahan
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a case against Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, a key figure in the Sandeshkhali controversy in West Bengal, on charges of money laundering. Raids are currently being conducted at Shahjahan’s residence and six other locations. The ED’s action comes in the wake of accusations from women in Sandeshkhali, alleging Shahjahan’s involvement in land-grabbing and coercive sexual assault.
Evading Authorities Since Mob Attack
Sheikh Shahjahan has been evading law enforcement since a mob, allegedly linked to him, attacked ED officials during a search operation related to a ration scam on January 5. The incident heightened tensions and spotlighted Shahjahan’s influence and power in the region. Despite the arrest of Shahjahan’s aides, Shibu Hazra and Uttam Sardar, Shahjahan remains at large. With 17 arrests made, the police are urging villagers to come forward with complaints, conducting camps to address concerns related to land grab and extortion.
Political Accusations and Widening Investigation
The BJP accuses the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress of shielding Shahjahan, while the TMC counters by accusing the ED of provoking locals. The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government regarding the attacks. The ongoing raids are part of a broader investigation into an alleged ration scam in the state, involving former food and civil supplies minister Jyotipriya Mallick, who has been in custody since October 2023. The Calcutta High Court has directed a collaborative Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising the CBI and West Bengal Police to investigate the assault on ED officials in Sandeshkhali.
