Islamabad Election Results Suspended by Pakistan Court
In a recent development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in Pakistan has suspended the results of three constituencies in the federal capital following allegations of manipulation by losing candidates. The three candidates in question, Amir Mughal, Shoaib Shaheen, and Mohammad Ali Bukhari, supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan, filed a petition in the IHC challenging the election results.
The IHC, after a thorough hearing of the case, took the decisive step of suspending the poll result notifications previously issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for NA-46, NA-47, and NA-48. This suspension has temporarily halted the success of Anjum Aqeel Khan, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and Raja Khurram Nawaz, who had emerged as the winners in their respective constituencies.
Candidates Khan, Chaudhry, and Nawaz Face Electoral Disputes
The losing candidates, Khan and Chaudhry, contested on the tickets of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), while Nawaz secured victory as an independent candidate. Interestingly, Nawaz, who was not initially backed by the PTI, later joined the PML-N after his triumph in the elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan initially issued a status quo order after the candidates challenged the results on February 10, but on February 11, the commission declared Khan, Chaudhry, and Nawaz as the returned candidates.
General Elections Raise Concerns of Delay and Rigging
The general elections, held on February 8, faced delays in announcing results, sparking concerns among the public. Speculations arose that the delay might have been intentional, raising questions about the transparency of the electoral process. Multiple political parties, not just the PTI, contested the results, accusing election authorities of rigging the outcome.
PTI Allegations and Protests Against Election Fraud
Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, took to social media to allege the printing of fake ballot papers in Lahore at a press owned by his political rival from PML-N, Ehsan. He claimed, “Even after 10 days of holding the elections, a very organized and coordinated series of rigging continues.” PTI leaders actively led protests, with Imran Khan emphasizing the need for discussions on the alleged election fraud during the first session of the Upper House of Parliament.
