Nawaz Sharif Nominates Shehbaz for PM and Maryam Nawaz for Punjab CM
Pakistan election 2024 witnessed a political twist as former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif nominated his younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, as the prime ministerial candidate for a new coalition alliance. The move comes after last week’s national elections resulted in a hung parliament, sparking uncertainty over government formation.
Shehbaz Sharif’s Nomination: A Strategic Move
Shehbaz Sharif, affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has been strategically nominated by his brother Nawaz Sharif to lead a coalition alliance formed among various parties. PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the decision, stating that Nawaz Sharif also nominated his daughter Maryam Nawaz for the position of chief minister of Punjab province.
Coalition Alliance and Political Dynamics
The PML-N, led by Nawaz Sharif, is the largest recognized party with 75 seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) holds the second position with 54 seats. Together, these two parties have enough seats to secure a simple majority in the 266-seat legislature. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, leader of the PPP, withdrew from contention for the prime ministerial position, expressing support for any nominee put forward by the PML-N.
Quelling Concerns and Resolving Deadlock
The announcement of the PPP’s support for Sharif’s party in establishing a minority government has quelled concerns regarding government formation. The alliance has emerged five days after the inconclusive elections on Feb. 8, which initially raised fears of renewed instability. Independent candidates backed by jailed former premier Imran Khan won 92 seats, but lacking the ability to form a government on their own, they ruled out alliances with PML-N or PPP.
Election Dynamics and Seat Distribution
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, independent candidates secured 101 seats, primarily backed by the PTI, while the PML-N and PPP collectively hold 129 seats. To form a government, a party needs 133 seats out of the 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly. The outcome of one constituency is still withheld, adding to the overall suspense in the aftermath of the elections.
