Jasprit Bumrah Makes History by Attaining Top Spot in ICC Test Bowling Rankings for the First Time
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has attained the pinnacle of the Test bowling rankings for the first time, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on February 7th.
This remarkable achievement makes Bumrah the first bowler in cricket history to secure the top spot in all three formats of the game. While he claimed the number 1 position in One Day Internationals (ODIs) on July 17, 2022, his current ODI ranking is 6th. Similarly, he previously held the top spot in the T20 format but is currently positioned at 89th in the rankings.
Bumrah’s ascent to the summit of the Test bowling rankings is attributed to his outstanding performance in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam, where he recorded impressive match figures of 9/91. This crucial contribution played a significant role in India’s series-equalling 106-run victory.
The ICC acknowledged Bumrah’s achievement, stating, “Jasprit Bumrah’s place as the best fast bowler in the world is confirmed following news that the India quick has claimed the No.1 spot on the latest ICC Men’s Test Bowler rankings.” Bumrah’s climb to the top saw him surpass teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, who now stands at the third position, with South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada in second place.
Despite having an impressive record with 10 five-wicket hauls in 34 Test appearances for India, Bumrah had never previously held the top Test bowling ranking. This achievement places him among the elite group of only four players from India, and notably, he is the first fast bowler to top the bowling charts. The others include Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Bedi.
Examining the statistics, Bumrah’s recent six-wicket haul in the second Test against England marked his third-best performance in Test cricket and his first in India. With this, Bumrah’s tally of Test wickets has reached 155. Notably, he became the second-fastest Asian bowler to reach 150 Test wickets, achieving this milestone in 34 Tests, just behind Pakistan’s former pacer Waqar Younis, who accomplished it in 27 Test matches.
