ICJ to Rule on Emergency Measures Amid Accusations of Genocide in Gaza
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is poised to make a crucial decision on whether to grant emergency measures against Israel in response to South Africa’s allegations of state-led “genocide” during the Israeli military operation in Gaza.
A public session, scheduled for 1 pm on Friday at the Peace Palace in The Hague, will witness Judge Joan E. Donoghue reading the court order.
The ICJ will deliver its verdict on South Africa’s request for provisional measures under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.
South Africa has urgently appealed to the ICJ, urging Israel to immediately suspend its military operations in Gaza.
The accusation is grounded in Israel’s actions throughout the conflict and contentious remarks made by Israeli officials concerning the treatment of Palestinians in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vehemently asserted an unwavering commitment to dismantling Hamas, rebuffing potential interference from the ICJ and entities like the “axis of evil” led by Iran.
During a press briefing, Netanyahu dismissed genocide accusations as a “hypocritical onslaught” orchestrated by those aiming to perpetrate another Holocaust against the Jewish people.
He highlighted alleged instances of antisemitism found in Hamas-controlled areas, citing the discovery of anti-Semitic materials, including copies of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf,” in Gaza’s tunnels.
Netanyahu, emphasizing the resilience of the Jewish people, declared determination to continue the fight “until the end.”
The ICJ’s ruling on Friday will determine the course of action in response to South Africa’s urgent appeal and the ongoing accusations against Israel.
