Maine Bars Trump from Republican Presidential Primary over Capitol Assault Involvement
The US state of Maine has blocked former President Donald Trump from participating in its Republican presidential primary, citing his involvement in the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol. Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, ruled Trump ineligible for the primary, asserting that the events of January 6 were orchestrated and supported by the former President.
Bellows emphasized that the assault on the foundations of the government, allegedly supported by Trump, is not tolerated by the US Constitution. She highlighted Maine law, stating it requires her to take action in response to such events.
This decision mirrors a similar move by Colorado, which also disqualified Trump from its Republican primary earlier in the month. Both states invoked the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which prohibits individuals previously sworn to defend the country from holding office if they engage in insurrection.
Trump’s campaign swiftly condemned Bellows’ ruling, denouncing it as an “attempted theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American voter.” Campaign spokesman Steven Cheung accused President Joe Biden and Democrats of utilizing government institutions to maintain their hold on power, characterizing these actions as an assault on American democracy.
Cheung asserted that Trump plans to challenge and appeal the decision made by the Maine secretary of state, signaling a forthcoming legal battle over Trump’s eligibility in the state’s Republican presidential primary.
