US Warship Shoots Down Drone, Missile Fired by Houthis
On Thursday, December 29, 2023, the USS Mason (DDG 87), a guided-missile destroyer, shot down one drone and one anti-ship ballistic missile in the Southern Red Sea that were fired by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
The Houthis have repeatedly targeted vessels in the vital Red Sea shipping lane, claiming to support Palestinians in Gaza1. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that there was no damage to any of the 18 ships in the area or reported injuries.
This marked the 22nd attempted attack on international shipping by the Houthis since mid-October.
The US Treasury Department unveiled sanctions against a network involved in financing Houthi attacks, including the head of the Currency Exchangers Association in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and three exchanges in Yemen and Turkey.
The Yemeni rebels claim to be targeting Israel and Israeli-linked vessels to push for a stop to the offensive in the Gaza Strip.
The latest round of the Israel-Hamas conflict began when the Palestinian militant group carried out a cross-border attack from Gaza on October 7, killing about 1,140 people, mostly civilians.
In response, the US has provided military aid to Israel, which has carried out a relentless campaign in Gaza, killing at least 21,320 people, mostly civilians
