Committee Formed by Caretaker PM Pakistan for Baloch Protest Talks; Detained Protesters Released After Negotiations
In response to ongoing protests, Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar initiated talks by forming a committee to engage with Baloch demonstrators in Islamabad, as per ARY News. The committee, headed by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi and caretaker Federal Minister for Privatization Fawad Hassan Fawad, also includes Governor Balochistan Malki Wali Kakar.
During a constructive meeting between the committee and the Baloch protesters, a positive atmosphere prevailed, fostering open dialogue aiming at resolving the concerns raised by the demonstrators, the report highlighted. Subsequently, both parties agreed to continue negotiations on Sunday, indicating a joint commitment to achieving a mutually agreeable resolution.
Earlier in the week, Islamabad Police detained numerous Baloch protesters, utilizing water cannons and baton charges to disperse the demonstration against enforced disappearances. This action faced criticism from human rights organizations and analysts, prompting the Baloch Yekjehti Committee (BYC) to file a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Responding to the situation, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq cautioned Islamabad IG Akbar Nasir Khan against impeding the protest, affirming the Baloch demonstrators’ constitutional right to assemble peacefully.
Simultaneously, the caretaker PM constituted a three-member committee, comprising Solangi, Fawad, and Jamal Shah, to engage with the families of the protesters. Following negotiations, an immediate order for the release of the detained individuals was issued. Additionally, the committee ministers held a press conference in Islamabad, asserting that the use of force aimed to prevent a potential crisis.
