The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, has joined hands with the Ashraya Hastha Trust (AHT) to introduce an ambitious rural mental health initiative named “NAMAN.” This program aims to test the feasibility of implementing a comprehensive rural mental health program across India, focusing initially on two taluks.

The official launch of the program, slated for today at the NIMHANS Convention Centre, will mark the commencement of the “NAMAN” initiative. The envisioned duration for the program’s completion is three years. NIMHANS will play a pivotal role in devising the program’s implementation strategy, with support from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh, acting as a sub-hub for successful execution in Uttarakhand.

This collaborative effort between NIMHANS, AIIMS Rishikesh, and the health departments of Karnataka and Uttarakhand is bolstered by financial assistance from the Ashraya Hasta Trust, ensuring the program’s seamless operation.

The “NAMAN” program’s overarching vision is to establish a comprehensive mental health initiative at the taluka level. This holistic approach encompasses mental health promotion, preventive measures, treatment of mental disorders, and rehabilitation services. The selected taluks for the pilot implementation are Munsiyari taluk in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, and Belur taluk in Hassan district, Karnataka, aiming to cater to the mental health needs of the entire population residing in these regions.

Embracing a lifespan approach, the program intends to provide mental health services covering all age groups, from prenatal to end-of-life care. Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister of the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, Karnataka, is expected to grace the occasion, affirming the government’s support and involvement in this crucial mental health initiative.
