Women Reservation Bill Advocacy
During a parliamentary discussion on the ‘Parliamentary Journey of 75 years Starting from Samvidhan Sabha,’ leader of the opposition Mallikarjun Kharge from Congress urged the government to bring the Women Reservation Bill to the parliament. He emphasized the importance of this bill, stating that increasing female representation in politics is crucial. Kharge pointed out that currently, women make up only 14% of lawmakers in both houses combined, with even lower representation in legislative assemblies at just 10%. He highlighted the progress made in other countries, such as the United States and Britain, where female representation in their respective parliaments has significantly increased.
Demand for Reservation in New Parliament Building
Ram Nath Thakur of JD(U) also supported the call for women’s reservation and suggested implementing it when lawmakers move to the new parliament building. He proposed a reservation of 33% for women in the new setting. Thakur further demanded a special session to discuss the issue of rising inflation and potential remedies.
Unemployment Concerns
Kharge addressed the issue of unemployment in his speech, expressing alarm at the 8 crore educated jobless youths in the country. He warned that if unemployment continues to rise, it could pose a significant threat to democracy in the country. He also criticized inflation, citing the soaring prices of essentials like tomatoes, which have reached Rs 400 to 500 per kilogram.
Symbolic Concerns
Kharge raised concerns about the use of the BJP’s election symbol, the lotus, on G20 signboards. Leader of the House Piyush Goyal defended the move, highlighting the successful G20 Summit held earlier in the month. Kharge emphasized that national pride should be above party symbols, emphasizing unity.
Acknowledgment of Government Efforts
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar commended the government’s efforts in ensuring the success of the G20 Summit, reflecting bipartisan recognition of the importance of such international events.
