Is Democracy at Risk?

In a passionate address during a Lok Sabha discussion on the “Parliamentary Journey of 75 years,” Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury voiced concerns about the state of democracy in India. His speech addressed multiple issues, from inclusivity and freedom of expression to the role of central agencies and equal opportunities for Members of Parliament (MPs).

Inclusivity and Freedom of Expression in Parliament

Chowdhury started by highlighting the perceived lack of inclusivity in various aspects of society, including Parliament. He argued that India, a nation of unending pluralism, should respect the opinions of everyone. Citing the need to shed arrogance, he emphasized that life should be significant rather than merely long, quoting a popular Bollywood dialogue.

One-Party Dictatorship Concerns

One of the most striking points raised by Chowdhury was the fear in people’s minds regarding a potential “one-party dictatorship.” He expressed concerns about attempts to destabilize opposition-ruled states and the selective use of central agencies. These fears, he argued, threaten the core principles of democracy.

Acknowledging Contributions

Chowdhury paid tribute to past prime ministers, starting with Jawaharlal Nehru, highlighting their immense contributions to India’s growth. He commended former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his role in signing the landmark Indo-US nuclear deal, which paved the way for the present India-America relationship.

Empowering Legislation

The Congress leader credited Sonia Gandhi for her initiative in enacting essential legislation during the UPA’s rule, such as the Right to Information Act, Right to Food Act, and Right to Education Act. He also acknowledged former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for ushering in the information technology revolution and establishing democracy at the grassroots with the Panchayati Raj Act.

Challenges and Concerns

Chowdhury didn’t shy away from discussing the challenges faced by the nation. He highlighted the negative impacts of the 2016 demonetization decision, the 2019 bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories, and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. He called for a moment of silence to honor soldiers recently killed by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir and expressed concern about the ongoing issues in Manipur.

A Call for Opposition Voices

Chowdhury’s speech ended with a plea for one day of the session to be dedicated to opposition members, allowing them to raise their concerns. He advocated for the recognition of all parties’ contributions to the nation’s growth.

DMK Leader’s Perspective

In the same discussion, DMK leader T R Baalu voiced his opinion that the current session was no different from previous ones. He stressed the need to acknowledge the contributions of all prime ministers and ensure that the country’s successes, such as Chandrayaan-3’s landing on the Moon, are celebrated as collective achievements rather than the success of a single party.
