Foxconn Announces $1.6 Billion Investment in India Amid Expansion Plans
Taiwanese electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., commonly known as Foxconn, is set to bolster its presence in India with a substantial investment of NT$50 billion ($1.6 billion). This move aligns with the company’s strategy to diversify operations outside China amid escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing.
Investment Details and Expansion Plans
While the company’s exchange filing in Taiwan revealed little about the specific nature of the projects, it indicated that the investment is intended for “operational needs.” Foxconn, a major supplier for Apple Inc., is already a significant player in the Indian market, manufacturing iPhones, including the latest iPhone 15.
Growing Footprint in Karnataka
Foxconn’s expansion in India includes significant investments in Karnataka. The state government announced in August that Foxconn planned to invest $600 million in two component factories, including a plant for iPhone mechanical enclosures and a semiconductor equipment manufacturing facility in collaboration with Applied Materials Inc. Additionally, a $700 million facility is planned near Bengaluru’s airport, likely for assembling iPhones.
It is not immediately clear whether the newly announced $1.6 billion investment is for these existing projects or for additional ventures.
Foxconn’s Indian Operations
Currently, Foxconn operates nine production campuses and over 30 factories in India, employing tens of thousands and generating around $10 billion in annual revenue. This expansion underscores the company’s commitment to India as a key manufacturing hub and reflects the broader trend of global tech firms diversifying their production bases amidst geopolitical shifts.
