Union Minister Alleges Rs 3753 Crore Scam in Delhi Jal Board
Union Minister Meenakashi Lekhi has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of a Rs 3,753 crore scam in the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). Lekhi asserts that evidence will emerge through investigation, likening this alleged scam to the Sheesh Mahal scam. She claimed that the AAP, under CM Arvind Kejriwal, engaged in these fraudulent activities, which included irregularities in accounting and contract allocations.
BJP’s Allegations Against AAP Government
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleges that the AAP government has mismanaged DJB funds, particularly in the allocation of water tanker supply projects in the city. Lekhi, speaking at the BJP headquarters, claimed that the AAP government, which came to power promising to end the ‘tanker mafia’, has instead allowed its influence to grow. She accused the government of paying an additional 35% over the allocated budget for these projects.
Specific Claims of Irregularities
The Union Minister detailed how the AAP government purportedly bypassed the tendering process to award contracts to existing contractors. She highlighted discrepancies between the DJB’s financial and bank statements, suggesting a deliberate attempt to avoid standard tendering procedures by keeping contract values below certain thresholds.
Allegations of Kickbacks and Mismanagement
The BJP claims that these irregularities were part of a larger scheme to secure kickbacks, similar to practices allegedly followed in other scams like the excise scam. Lekhi pointed out that the AAP government paid significantly more than necessary for tanker services, suggesting this was done to receive illegal payments.
Call for Investigation and Accountability
Amidst these allegations, the Delhi BJP has urged CM Kejriwal to either allow the CBI or ED to investigate these claims or face a push from the BJP for a comprehensive probe into the DJB’s finances. They questioned Kejriwal’s silence on the matter and challenged his willingness to submit to a thorough investigation.
These allegations add to the ongoing political turmoil in Delhi, with the BJP intensifying its scrutiny of the AAP government’s handling of public resources and projects.
