Schools in Noida and Ghaziabad Switch to Online Classes Amid Severe Air Quality
The administrations of Noida and Ghaziabad have ordered the suspension of physical classes in schools due to the persistently severe air quality in the National Capital Region. The directive aligns with the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan Stage-IV, which will remain in effect until November 10. Schools are advised to transition to online classes to ensure the health and safety of students.
Delhi Government Implements Odd-Even Rule
In a related move to combat the escalating air pollution, the neighboring Delhi government has decided to reintroduce the odd-even vehicular rule from November 13 to November 20. The scheme regulates the use of vehicles based on their registration numbers to reduce traffic congestion and, consequently, air pollution. An extension of this rule will be considered based on the air quality assessments in the upcoming days.
Comprehensive Measures to Curb Pollution
The action plan also includes a ban on truck traffic into Delhi, excluding essential services, and a prohibition on Delhi-registered diesel Medium and Heavy Goods Vehicles, except for essential commodities. The GRAP Stage-IV restrictions apply to the wider NCR, and the Delhi government may further decide to extend online classes for additional grades if the air quality does not improve. The air pollution crisis in Delhi is a recurring issue during winter months, exacerbated by factors such as vehicular emissions, stubble burning, and weather patterns that trap pollutants in the air. Doctors warn that an AQI level above 400 poses a severe health risk, particularly to individuals with existing health conditions.
