West Bengal Minister Arrested by ED for Alleged Corruption in Public Distribution System
Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Minister, Jyotripriya Mallik, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on allegations of corruption in the public distribution system. This arrest followed the ED’s searches at Mr. Mallick’s residence in Salt Lake, Kolkata, a day earlier.
Protesting His Innocence Amid the Arrest
Amid media frenzy surrounding his arrest, Mr. Mallik firmly protested his innocence, stating he was the “victim of a grave conspiracy.” The ED issued an official release, confirming his arrest in connection with alleged corruption in the ration distribution system.
Minister’s Portfolio and TMC’s Response
At the time of his arrest, Jyotripriya Mallick held the state minister position for Forest Affairs, previously having the Food and Civil Supplies portfolio. The ruling Trinamool Congress, headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had not yet released a statement regarding their minister’s arrest.
Series of Arrests and Investigations
This isn’t the first arrest involving high-profile figures in West Bengal. Earlier this year, former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee were arrested by the ED, connected to an investigation into the teachers’ recruitment scam, after substantial cash was discovered at Mukherjee’s residence. Additionally, TMC’s Burdwan district president Anubrata Mondal faced arrest in connection with a cattle smuggling case. Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of the chief minister and a prominent TMC leader, has also been summoned and questioned by the ED multiple times in relation to an alleged coal ‘scam’ case.
