Cracking Down on Sextortion Scam
Delhi police have made a significant breakthrough by apprehending the mastermind behind a sextortion racket that had targeted numerous individuals across the country. Mahendra Singh, the man behind the operation, was arrested in Haryana’s Mewat. This revelation has exposed a sophisticated scam that had been operating for several years, preying on unsuspecting victims.
The Sextortion Modus Operandi
The sextortion operation came to the attention of law enforcement when a man in Delhi lodged a complaint stating that he was being blackmailed. The victim’s ordeal began with a call from a woman who engaged in an intimate video call with him. Subsequently, Mahendra Singh, posing as ACP Ram Pandey, contacted the victim, claiming to be a law enforcement officer. He demanded a substantial sum of money in exchange for deleting the explicit video in which the victim was featured.
Initially, Mahendra demanded Rs 9 lakh from the victim, under the promise of erasing the incriminating video. However, despite the victim paying the requested amount, Mahendra persisted, demanding an additional Rs 15 lakh to desist from pursuing the case. To escalate the pressure, Mahendra even threatened to send the victim’s family to jail if the demands were not met. Overcome by fear, the victim refrained from disclosing the situation to anyone initially. However, after some days, he confided in a friend, who encouraged him to report the matter to the police.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Upon receiving the complaint, the police initiated a thorough investigation, which culminated in the arrest of Mahendra Singh in Mewat. During the arrest, the police found several items in his possession, including a swipe machine, a pen drive, a 16 GB memory card, and an iPhone. Subsequent investigations unveiled a network of victims who had fallen prey to similar blackmail attempts.
Mahendra Singh, aged 36, confessed that during calls to victims, he would either pose as ACP Ram Pandey or claim to be a YouTuber, threatening to expose their compromising videos to the public. The police are now working to identify and assist all victims targeted by this reprehensible scheme.
This arrest serves as a warning and a step towards eradicating such extortion schemes that exploit unsuspecting individuals through the threat of exposure and embarrassment.
