Highlighting Mutual Concerns: PM Modi Raises Extremism Issues in Canada
During a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the G20 summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the “continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada.” These elements have been involved in promoting secessionism, inciting violence against Indian diplomats, and damaging diplomatic premises. PM Modi also conveyed concerns about threats against the Indian community and their places of worship in Canada.
Extremism in Canada: A Growing Concern
Canada has been known as a hub for expat Sikhs, and extremist activities have been on the rise, making headlines in recent months. The Indian government has pointed out the nexus between extremist forces and organized crime, drug syndicates, and human trafficking in Canada.
Calls for Cooperation and Mutual Respect
Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries in addressing these threats. He also emphasized the need for a relationship built on mutual respect and trust to ensure the progress of the India-Canada relationship.
Trudeau’s Response
Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged discussions on Khalistani extremism and foreign interference with PM Modi over the years. He reiterated Canada’s commitment to defending freedom of expression, conscience, and peaceful protest while also preventing violence and countering hatred. Trudeau highlighted that the actions of a few individuals do not represent the entire community or Canada. He also emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law and addressing foreign interference.
Growing Instances of Khalistani Activities in Canada
In recent years, Canada has witnessed various instances of Khalistani activities, including protests outside the Indian Embassy, assaults on Indian-origin journalists, parades celebrating the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the appearance of threat posters targeting Indian diplomats. India has consistently raised concerns and lodged protests regarding these incidents.
The meeting between the two leaders underscores the shared concerns of both countries regarding extremism and the importance of addressing these issues through cooperation and mutual respect.
