US Urges India to Investigate Allegations in Nijjar Case
Key Highlights:
- US State Department emphasizes seriousness of allegations.
- Calls for thorough investigation by Indian authorities.
- Diplomatic tension between India and Canada escalates.
The US State Department has urged India to take recent allegations regarding the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar “very seriously and investigate.” This statement follows twists and turns in the case, including the recent arrest of three individuals linked to Nijjar’s killing.
During a State Department briefing, spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the gravity of the situation and stressed the importance of India’s investigation into the matter. He referred media queries to Canadian authorities regarding the ongoing investigation and emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry by Indian authorities.
The diplomatic crisis between India and Canada intensified after Canadian Prime Minister accused Indian government agents of involvement in Nijjar’s killing in June 2023. However, India has refuted these claims as baseless. The case continues to be marred by controversy, with recent developments including fresh allegations by Canada’s New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh.
Jagmeet Singh renewed claims of Indian involvement following the arrest of three suspects, despite the Canadian police administration not providing evidence linking India to the incident. The arrest of the three individuals, all Indian nationals, has further fueled tensions between the two nations. The case remains under investigation as diplomatic relations strain amidst the unfolding events.
