23.7 Million Afghans Need Urgent Humanitarian Aid in 2024: UNAMA

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported a staggering figure of 23.7 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in 2024. Despite a decline in violence, Afghanistan continues to face significant humanitarian challenges, highlighting the ongoing crisis in the country.

Of the 23.7 million individuals requiring aid, 5.9 million are women and 5.4 million are men, according to UNAMA’s statement. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the severe deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is exacerbated by decades of conflict, poverty, repeated disasters, and economic downturn. Since the Taliban took control of the country in August 2021, political transition, economic contraction, and reduced donor funding have heightened risks and needs at the local level, leading to forced deportations and dwindling international aid.
