Kuljeet Singh Sandhu from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory in the elections for Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh.

The BJP gained 19 votes, while the INDIA bloc (Congress + AAP) received 16 votes. One vote was declared invalid.

In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipality, the BJP-led bloc, which initially had 14 seats, gained strength when three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors joined the BJP on February 19. With the revised strength, the BJP secured 19 votes for its candidate, defeating the INDIA bloc candidate Gurpreet Singh Gabi.

This follows the Supreme Court’s earlier decision declaring AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar as the winner of the Chandigarh mayoral polls after finding irregularities in the counting process.

Kumar was declared mayor with 20 votes, including the eight votes initially defaced by the Returning Officer.
