Khachanov Clinches Qatar Open Title in Thrilling Final
Karen Khachanov secured his sixth tour-level title and the first of the season with a gripping victory over Jakub Mensik in the Qatar Open final.
The 27-year-old outlasted Mensik 7-6(12), 6-4 in a hard-hitting encounter at the ATP 250 tournament. Khachanov’s resilience shone as he saved four set points in the first set, eventually seizing the lead with a forehand return on Mensik’s second serve.
Capitalizing on the momentum, Khachanov broke Mensik’s serve in the opening game of the second set, sealing his triumph.
Unforgettable Week for Mensik Despite Final Loss
Jakub Mensik, playing in only his third tour-level event and the youngest finalist in Doha tournament history, experienced a dream week.
Despite the loss in the final, Mensik made a remarkable impression by defeating notable players, including Andy Murray, Andrey Rublev, and Gael Monfils, en route to his first tour-level final. Reflecting on the week, Mensik expressed joy for the unforgettable experience.
Khachanov’s Dominance with Serve and Confidence
Khachanov’s powerful serves, precision, and confidence were evident throughout the match, with an impressive 83% of points coming from his first serve.
Remarkably, he did not face a single break point during the entire contest. The Russian’s attacking play from the baseline, coupled with his advantage in backhand cross-court rallies, secured his first title since Zhuhai in September of the previous year.
Khachanov’s Reflections and Mensik’s Remarkable Journey
In his post-match interview, Khachanov acknowledged the significance of each title and the confidence gained from winning the first set. He highlighted the intensity of the tie-break, reminiscent of the previous day.
On the other side, Mensik expressed mixed emotions, balancing sadness for the tough loss and happiness for a great match. The 18-year-old’s journey from using a Next Gen spot to reach the final showcased his potential and resilience.
As the Qatar Open concluded, Khachanov celebrated his victory, while Mensik’s remarkable run left a lasting impression on the tournament, setting the stage for more thrilling tennis battles in the upcoming events.
