PM-Kisan, Budget Hike, Kisan Rail: Government Sources List Pro-Farmer Steps
Hours before farmers resume their march to Delhi, sources reveal the Narendra Modi government’s decade-long commitment to pro-farmer initiatives, emphasizing increased budget allocations for agriculture. In the 2023-24 fiscal year alone, the budget allocation surged by 5.26 times compared to 2013-14, demonstrating a substantial financial commitment to the agricultural sector.
Strategic Measures for Farmer Welfare
The government has implemented various measures to support farmers, including the PM-Kisan scheme, the Kisan credit card system, and the establishment of new farmer producer organizations. Notably, the government has worked towards enhancing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, with a focus on protecting farmers from distress sales and ensuring a minimum 50% return over production costs.
Innovative Solutions and Environmental Initiatives
Apart from financial measures, the government has taken innovative steps such as the Kisan Credit Card scheme, providing a substantial credit outlay of Rs 20 lakh crore in 2023-24. Additionally, the government extended benefits to animal husbandry and fisheries farmers, addressing their short-term working capital needs.
Addressing environmental concerns, the government allocated funds to combat air pollution in Delhi caused by crop residue burning. A substantial amount of Rs.3138.56 crores has been released to states for crop residue management through mechanization interventions from 2018-19 to 2022-23.
To further substantiate their efforts, government sources highlight the expansion of crop insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. As a result, food grain production has reached an all-time high of 329.69 million tonnes in 2022-23, showcasing the success of these comprehensive agricultural policies.
The Kisan Rail initiative, aimed at preventing the spoilage of farmers’ produce, stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving logistical support for agricultural products.
