Voters Flock to 90,000 Polling Stations as Pakistan General Elections Kick Off
Islamabad, Feb 8 (IANS) – The democratic fervor takes center stage in Pakistan as citizens head to 90,000 polling stations nationwide for the much-anticipated general elections. With security at the forefront, polling commenced at 8:00 a.m. local time and is scheduled to conclude at 5 p.m., ensuring a secure and orderly electoral process.
Mobile Services Temporarily Halted Amid Security Measures
Just moments before the polls opened, a temporary suspension of mobile internet services rippled across the nation, as reported by Dawn. The move, as articulated by the country’s interior ministry, is a precautionary measure in response to a recent surge in terrorist activities. This strategic decision aims to safeguard the electoral proceedings and prioritize the safety of citizens during this critical democratic exercise.
Islamabad police, having diligently manned polling stations since Wednesday morning, assured the public of robust security measures in place to maintain a peaceful voting environment.
Over 128 Million Eligible Voters: A Significant Electoral Turnout
Simultaneously, the elections for the four provincial assemblies are underway, adding to the complexity and significance of this democratic event. A staggering 128 million people, representing more than half of the country’s total population, are eligible to cast their votes in these general elections. While elections were initially slated for 266 seats in the lower house, a seat’s postponement due to a candidate’s unfortunate demise, as reported by the ECP, adds a poignant note to the unfolding political landscape. The nation watches eagerly as the electoral process unfolds, shaping the future trajectory of Pakistan’s governance.
