Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Extended by 45 Days Amid Ongoing Tensions

Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Extended by 45 Days Amid Ongoing Tensions

BEIRUT, MAY 18, 2026 [VoM News]: To prevent escalation and initiate diplomatic efforts, the 45-day extension in the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been announced, which would bring relief and an end to strikes and destruction in border villages.

Both Israel and Lebanon have agreed to the extension of the ceasefire announced by the United States Department of State.

As the diplomatic efforts brokered by the United States are ongoing, the extension would be key to reducing tensions and advancing negotiations.

“Direct political discussions will resume at the State Department on June 2–3, along with parallel military-level security talks scheduled to take place at the Pentagon on May 29,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott stated.

Nada Hamadeh Mouawad and former ambassador Simon Karam are representing Lebanon, whereas Yechiel Leiter and senior security officials are included in the Israeli negotiating delegation.

As per details available with VoM News, the talks are focused on the demand for the disarmament of Hezbollah, strengthening security arrangements along the border, and steps to formalise Israel-Lebanon ties.

Amid the truce announcement, there are still several reports of attacks in southern Lebanon. So far, 2,951 deaths and 8,988 injuries have been reported after Israeli operations, Lebanon’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center stated.

However, clashes and Israeli airstrikes are still continuing, claiming the lives of nine people, reports reveal, while Hezbollah has claimed attacks on Israeli drones, troops, bulldozers, and a Merkava tank.

Now, for a longer-term settlement, this 45-day extension is being seen as a key diplomatic window by political commentators, which, if successful, would definitely pave the way for lasting peace.
