Tamil Nadu SIR: Claims and Objections Deadline Extended Till January 30
Chennai, January 20 — The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, giving voters additional time to verify and correct their details. The revised deadline is now January 30, 2026.
The decision was announced on Monday by Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik, who said the extension was granted after the Commission reviewed multiple factors with the aim of ensuring maximum voter inclusion. The original deadline for submitting claims and objections had ended on January 18.
In an official statement, the Election Commission urged all eligible citizens to use the extended window to seek inclusion of their names, request corrections to existing entries, or raise objections against incorrect or duplicate records in the electoral rolls. Voters were advised not to miss what has been described as the final opportunity to ensure their details are accurate ahead of upcoming electoral processes.
The Special Intensive Revision exercise was announced in October 2025, with January 1, 2026 fixed as the qualifying date for determining voter eligibility in the state. Draft electoral rolls were published on December 19, 2025, and the claims and objections period was initially scheduled from December 19 to January 18.

According to the release, the Commission invoked its powers under the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, to extend the deadline by nearly two weeks. The move is intended to accommodate voters who were unable to complete verification within the original timeframe due to procedural or logistical reasons.
Election officials reiterated that the SIR is a key exercise aimed at improving the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls by removing ineligible entries, updating voter information and facilitating the inclusion of newly eligible voters.
Claims and objections can be filed through designated election offices as well as prescribed online platforms. The extended deadline is expected to particularly benefit first-time voters, migrants and individuals whose names were omitted or contained errors, thereby strengthening the credibility of the electoral roll ahead of future elections in Tamil Nadu.
