India Reiterates Opposition to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)
India has once again expressed its opposition to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), citing concerns about sovereignty and territorial integrity. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that unlike in the past, India had not received an invitation to this year’s Belt and Road Forum. He highlighted India’s well-known and consistent position on the BRI, emphasizing the project’s disregard for India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
India’s Critique of BRI
India has been a vocal critic of the BRI, primarily due to the inclusion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir. This territorial dispute has been a major point of contention for India. In May 2017, India issued a statement outlining its concerns about the BRI during the first Belt and Road Forum.
Russian President’s Attendance
Regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attendance at this year’s Belt and Road Forum after skipping the G20 Summit in New Delhi, Bagchi stated that India is not inclined to link G20 participation with other matters.
