Authorities in Srinagar have suspended a government employee for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which governs the behavior of public servants during election periods. Ghulam Mohammad Mir, a Junior Lineman with the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), was found participating in and facilitating political party meetings, an action deemed inappropriate under the MCC guidelines.
An official order issued regarding the incident states that Mir’s participation in political activities constituted a clear violation of the MCC, leading to his immediate suspension from duty. The suspension is intended to reinforce the seriousness of adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Election Commission of India.
The Model Code of Conduct is a set of regulations that comes into effect as soon as the election schedule is announced by the Election Commission. It remains in force until the entire election process is concluded.
These guidelines are designed to ensure a fair and level playing field for all political parties by regulating the conduct of candidates, political parties, and government employees during elections.
Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, the District Election Officer of Srinagar, has emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the MCC. He has instructed all relevant authorities to monitor government employees closely and to take swift action against any violations of the Code that are brought to their attention.
The suspension of Mir is seen as a warning to others that any breach of the MCC will be met with serious consequences.
