SK Hynix Overtakes Samsung; Become South Korea’s Most Valuable Listed Company

SK Hynix shares unseated Samsung Electronics as South Korea’s most valuable stock as the company, the producer of the high-bandwidth memory chips at the center of the AI gold rush, gains 340% this year. The company, which briefly topped the world’s most profitable market from last October to February, had a market capitalization of 2,080.4 trillion won on May 31, beating out Samsung Electronics’s 2,066.7 trillion won without the value of the company’s preferred shares. Samsung Electronics says its valuation comes to 2,246.4 trillion won when the preferred shares are included.

“With early commitment and significant development in HBM chips, we secured the No.1 position in this growth market,”SK Hynix Vice President and the head of the Memory Group Kim Jae-woo said in a statement,referring to the high-bandwidth memory product essential for AI processers and the operation of data centers.

The company is projected to hold as much as 61% of the global HBM market share in 2025, surpassing those of its rivals, Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology. The shift from the top spot also reflects SK Hynix’s remarkable turnaround from early 2000s when it was financially distressed and had even eyed selling itself to Micron Technology.

After reporting huge losses in 2023 amid the worst memory-chip downturn, the company quickly snapped up historic profits as technology titans spent money building the foundation of the AI infrastructure worldwide. With increased capacity for specialized memory chips, analysts expect it could pose new challenges to Samsung Electronics’s leading market position in the DRAM market as the demand and development continue for AI memory devices.
