Amarnath Yatra Security Plan: QR-Code IDs and Pehchaan App Introduced for Pilgrim Safety

JAMMU, June 25, 2026 [VoM News]: The Jammu and Kashmir Police has launched a QR-code-based, tamper-proof identity card for service providers associated with the Amarnath Yatra, which commences on July 3. Last year, it was introduced on a pilot basis. The cards will be issued to pony handlers, palanquin bearers, porters, guides, transport operators and vendors. According to the police, workers have to display the QR code on their person.

These codes can be scanned to instantly verify the worker’s background and identity. With this, the police can ensure that terrorists or other unauthorised persons are not posing as local workers. Pehchaan mobile app has launched to maintain a digital record of registered service providers, the force said.

Real-time credential verification will be enabled for pilgrims and security staff, and police will identify workers operating without clearance. A security grid with multiple layers has been put in place from Lakhanpur to Balatal and Pahalgam base camps. The 670 companies of CAPFs to be deployed by the Ministry of Home Affairs includes CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF and SSB and also the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police. For a second consecutive year, helicopter services are suspended as the yatra corridor is denoted as a no-fly zone.

The routes will be monitored through a network of watch towers and observation posts, drone surveillance, and RFID tagging of pilgrims, CCTV cameras and vehicles. A mock drill was held in Bhagwati Nagar base camp Jammu by the NSG and other agencies recently to assess response during a terror attack and hostage situation.

They also announced traffic restrictions. Civilian vehicles heading to the Valley will not be allowed to proceed for Jammu before 11.30 am while traffic heading towards Srinagar will not be allowed to cross the Banihal-Qazigund tunnel after 3 pm.
