Was Iran’s Jellyfish Drone Formation a Coordinated Drone Swarm? US F-15 Pilot Claim, Defense Officials Divided
VoM News Desk, June 25, 2026: A new debate has been triggered among defence analysts after a rescued US F-15 pilot reportedly described a coordinated formation of Iranian drones resembling a jellyfish shortly before the incident.
A 36-hour-long rescue operation was carried out by joint forces of the United States and Israel after the aircraft was shot down over Iran in April. Before the incident, the pilot reportedly described seeing a coordinated formation of Iranian drones resembling a jellyfish, according to CNN
The pilot informed intelligence officials that several drones appeared to be interconnected and were moving together in a synchronised pattern, with smaller drones positioned beneath larger ones.
Analysts stated that the formation may have involved “one-to-many meshed networking”, a system that allows an operator to control multiple unmanned aircraft at once.
However, as no public evidence is on record, US officials remain divided over this view. Some have pointed towards the pilot’s health and suggested that disorientation or concussion may have affected his account. US intelligence agencies have not released any information so far to confirm whether the drone formation played a role in the aircraft being brought down.
CNN reported that Russia and China may have helped Iran improve its technological capabilities. However, there have also been reports over the past several years of Iran’s advancement in manufacturing high-powered warfare drones.
Meshed drone networks can coordinate formations, carry explosives, and launch follow-up attacks after an initial strike, posing a serious challenge to conventional air defences.
However, it remains to be seen whether the alleged jellyfish drone formation was behind the incident or whether the pilot’s health condition influenced his account.
