Passenger Ferry Service Between India and SriLanka Enhances People-to-People Contacts
In a virtual ceremony celebrating the launch of a passenger ferry service between Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai near Jaffna in Sri Lanka, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative. He highlighted that this marks a significant step towards enhancing people-to-people contacts between the two nations.
A Focus on Connectivity and Cooperation
Minister Jaishankar emphasized that New Delhi has adopted a “generous and far-sighted approach” toward its neighboring countries, particularly Sri Lanka. India’s approach prioritizes connectivity, cooperation, and contacts, aiming to strengthen ties and support equal dignity and rights for all Sri Lankans. He spoke of future plans, including grid connections, pipelines, and economic corridors, which reflect India’s commitment to regional development and collaboration.
Addressing Tamil Community Aspirations
India has consistently conveyed its support for fulfilling the aspirations of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka, advocating for their rights and respect. The launch of the ferry service is in line with the leaders of both countries’ announcement in July, underscoring the significance of the initiative for strengthening India-Sri Lanka ties.
Ferry Service Operation Details
Operated by the Shipping Corporation of India, the high-speed ferry has a capacity of 150 passengers. Covering a distance of approximately 60 nautical miles (110 km) between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai, the ferry offers a more accessible and efficient mode of transport, reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity.
India’s Neighbourhood First Policy
Minister Jaishankar reiterated India’s ‘Neighbourhood First policy’ and its commitment to bolstering connectivity and cooperation with neighboring countries. He cited the Chennai-Jaffna flights as an example of this approach, sanctioned by Prime Minister Modi, who has shown a keen interest in the welfare of all in Sri Lanka, particularly those in Tamil Nadu.
A Focus on Ease of Living and Economic Benefits
India’s commitment to ease of living, business, and bettering the lives of its citizens is also reflected in the ferry service. This initiative aims to foster people-to-people connectivity and facilitate cargo services, benefitting small businesses and enhancing economic opportunities.
Advancing Maritime Security and Cooperation
The launch of the passenger ferry is part of India’s broader commitment to the security and growth of the region. It fosters maritime security, disaster response, and environmental protection. The service is not only a step in enhancing people-to-people connectivity but also underscores India’s support for the smooth operation of the Kankesanthurai harbor.
As India and Sri Lanka embark on this new chapter of cooperation, the passenger ferry service symbolizes their shared commitment to strengthen bonds and promote mutual prosperity.
