The Guinness World Records 2024 boasts nine captivating chapters, each delving into different aspects of human achievement. India’s Oldest Record: Monsoon Marvel in Cherrapunji
One of India’s oldest records featured in the book dates back to June 1995 when Cherrapunji, a high-altitude town in Meghalaya, received an astonishing 2.493 meters (8 ft 2 in) of rainfall over a 48-hour period. This record-breaking achievement showcases the region’s extraordinary monsoon phenomenon. Additionally, the record for the most extreme 48-hour rainfall period in the world, verified by the World Meteorological Organization, reflects the unique climate in Cherrapunji.
Art and Sculpture: Mermaid in Kerala
Jalakanyaka (or Mermaid), a remarkable creation by Indian sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman, graces the record book as the world’s largest sculpture of a merperson. Measuring 26.5 meters (87 ft) in length and 7.6 meters (25 ft) in height, this concrete mermaid reclines in a shell-shaped pool at Shankumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The accompanying shell is approximately 32 meters (105 ft) long.
Epic Road Journey: Circumnavigation by Car
Saloo Choudhury and his wife Neena Choudhury achieved a historic record as they circumnavigated the Earth by car, covering six continents and a distance of 24,901 road miles (40,075 kilometers). This awe-inspiring journey, conducted under the rules applicable in 1989 and 1991, was completed in 69 days, 19 hours, and 5 minutes, commencing on September 9 and concluding on November 17, 1989. The couple embarked on this adventurous expedition in a 1989 Hindustan “Contessa Classic” and started and finished in Delhi.
The Shortest Living Woman and More
Jyoti Amge, hailing from Nagpur, holds the title of the shortest living woman, with a height of 62.8 centimeters (24.7 inches). This distinctive record reflects the incredible diversity of human existence.
Guinness World Records 2024 is a testament to the boundless potential of human achievement and the enduring spirit of record-breaking. With India’s significant presence in the latest edition, it showcases the country’s remarkable contributions to the world of records.
