US adds 37 Chinese entities to trade restriction list post-2023 spy balloon incident

    Key Highlights:

    1. Biden administration adds 37 Chinese entities to trade restriction list.
    2. Some entities accused of supporting suspected spy balloon over US.
    3. Move reflects ongoing punishment of Beijing over security concerns.

As tensions escalate between Beijing and Washington, the Biden administration has taken action by adding 37 Chinese entities to a trade restriction list, as reported by CNN. Among them are units of China Electronics Technology Group, alleged to be supporting China’s quantum technology capabilities with potential military applications, posing national security risks to the US.

The move comes in response to the suspected spy balloon incident that occurred in February 2023, which fueled political outrage in Washington. The Commerce Department’s decision to add entities to the list indicates continued punishment of Beijing over security concerns. China has denied accusations, claiming the balloon was a weather balloon blown off course.

The trade restriction list, known as the entity list, aims to curb technology flow to China amidst fears of bolstering its military capabilities. Being added to the list complicates US suppliers’ ability to ship to targeted entities. Additionally, the Biden administration included entities for attempting to acquire American items for drone manufacturing for the Chinese military and for shipping controlled items to Russia.
