Air India Express Faces Flight Disruptions Due to Cabin Crew Shortage
Key Highlights:
- Air India Express experiences flight disruptions as a section of cabin crew reports sick.
- Over 70 flights have been cancelled, causing inconvenience to passengers.
- Efforts are underway to address the issue, with affected passengers offered full refunds or rescheduling options.
Flight operations at Air India Express have been disrupted following last-minute sick reports from a section of cabin crew, resulting in the cancellation of more than 70 flights. An airline spokesperson confirmed the disruptions, stating that efforts are ongoing to understand and address the reasons behind the crew shortages.
Passengers affected by the cancellations will be provided with options for a full refund or complimentary rescheduling to alternative dates to minimize inconvenience. Air India Express, acquired by the Tata Group as part of a government-led divestment program, is currently undergoing integration with AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India.
Despite the setbacks, Air India Express maintains a significant presence in the domestic and international aviation market, with a 5.8% stake in the domestic segment and a notable position as the third-largest carrier for international traffic to and from India. The airline, focused on expanding its network, plans to substantially increase its fleet size by inducting at least 50 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft ordered in February 2023.
With a planned delivery program, Air India Express aims to induct an aircraft every 10 days, reaching a fleet size of 180 aircraft by the end of five years. The Tata Group-backed airline aims to double its market share in domestic and short-haul international air travel over the next five years, with plans to increase frequencies to various destinations, including both domestic and international routes.
